Halifax man facing Importing a Controlled Substance charge, Halifax, N.S.

A joint investigation conducted by the Nova Scotia RCMP Federal and Serious Organized Crime Section and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has resulted in a Halifax man being charged.

In early July, CBSA in Vancouver intercepted a package destined for a residence in Halifax that contained approximately 514 grams of acetyl fentanyl. CBSA contacted the RCMP who began an investigation resulting in the execution of a search warrant at a Halifax residence on August 7, 2015.

As a result, 54 year-old Richard Dale States of Halifax was arrested without incident at a Halifax residence and charged with Importing a Controlled Substance. States was released on a recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court on September 24, 2015. The investigation is ongoing.

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid drug commonly used for long-term pain management. It can come in the form of a patch, pill or powder and has become popular as a street drug. When sold on the street, it can be mixed in with or labelled as oxycodone or hydromorphone. Like all prescription drugs, taking fentanyl when not prescribed by a physician may result in serious injury or death.
