The project, spearheaded by Halifax resident Catherine Chapman, raises funds to purchase items that the homeless and near-homeless often go without in the summer. This includes bug spray, rain ponchos, toiletries and, of course, sunscreen. This year Brendan Maguire, MLA for Halifax Atlantic has partnered with Project Sunscreen to increase fundraising and awareness.
Each bag currently costs $15-25 depending on where supplies are available. In the past 20-40 bags have been assembled per year. If there are extra supplies that can’t be held for the next year they are donated to one of the local homeless shelters or drop-in’s. Having raised over $900 in 2016, this years goal is $1200.
Project Sunscreen always hands out packages on or near July 4th. Not for our southern neighbours, but for Catherine’s mother Margaret, who was born on July 4th. Margaret had a heart for the downtrodden and those in need of a little extra love. She left this world way too soon, but that passion for helping others lives on through her family and friends. Project Sunscreen was born out of a desire to reflect Margaret’s care for others.
