Halifax Plasma Center Ramps Up Compensation as Demand for Donor Plasma Surges

Local diagnostic firms call for more plasma as Drumlin steps up with increased pay and community-first approach

In a quiet corner of Halifax, a medical effort with global impact is unfolding—and it starts with ordinary Nova Scotians rolling up their sleeves.

Drumlin Plasma, a local plasma collection center, has seen a sharp uptick in demand from diagnostic partners across North America. These partners rely on plasma to manufacture test kits used to diagnose rare and chronic health conditions—from bleeding disorders to autoimmune diseases. As a result, Drumlin is urgently calling on more Haligonians to become donors—and they’re making it more worthwhile than ever.

Starting this month, Drumlin is increasing compensation for first-time donors and offering a special thank-you bonus to returning donors. The move reflects both rising demand and the company’s commitment to supporting the community that makes its work possible.

“Our partners are asking us for more plasma than ever,” says Darcy Shannon, CEO of Drumlin Plasma. “We don’t want to turn them away. That’s why we’re growing, and why we’re rewarding the people helping us do it.”

Unlike traditional blood donation, plasma donation is a compensated process that typically takes about 60–90 minutes. Plasma—the golden-colored liquid that carries blood cells—is rich in proteins essential for diagnostic testing. Donors can give up to twice per week.

At Drumlin, donations take place in a warm, welcoming center staffed by trained professionals who get to know their donors personally. The experience is low-stress, and many donors use the time to read, relax, or catch up on shows.

For donors like Jason M., it’s a win-win.
“I started donating because I wanted to help,” he says. “But the extra money every week makes a real difference. Plus, the staff are fantastic—it feels like a second home.”

Drumlin’s new compensation package for new donors is $100 each for the first 3 visits. After that its $40 for the 1st donation of the week at $60 for the 2nd.

The need is real—and the impact is profound. Every donation helps supply plasma to diagnostic manufacturers working to identify conditions earlier and more accurately. Each donation ultimately helps hundreds of people get diagnosed.

“You can’t get treated until you’re diagnosed,” Shannon notes. “That’s where Drumlin comes in—and that’s why every donor matters.”
