Halifax Police and RCMP release vehicle/pedestrian collision statistics, Halifax, N.S.

During the month of August, there were 13 vehicle/pedestrian collisions in Halifax. Twelve of these took place in the Halifax Regional Police jurisdiction, and one occurred in the RCMP jurisdiction.

Year over year, this represents an increase in both areas, with five incidents reported to Halifax Regional Police in August, 2013, and none in RCMP areas.

In both 2013 and 2014, the majority of vehicle/pedestrian collisions reported from January to August occurred in crosswalks (60% and 63%, respectively). Of the 143 pedestrians involved, 42 reported no injury, 77 experienced minor injuries, 17 experienced moderate injuries, five had serious injuries and there were two fatalities.

Police remind motorists and pedestrians that road safety is a shared responsibility. Motorists are reminded to pay attention to the road and drive defensively. Be particularly mindful at crosswalks and keep a watchful eye for pedestrians. Pedestrians are reminded to make eye contact with drivers and wait until vehicles come to a complete stop before attempting to cross the road at marked crosswalks and unmarked crosswalks.
