Halifax Public Gardens set for spring opening

Mother Nature appears to have closed the book on winter so that means it’s time to officially open the gates to the Halifax Public Gardens.

Park employees are busy ensuring the pathways are safe for use, and gardening work will soon begin. As long as no winter weather comes our way, the much-anticipated official launch into the 2017 season will happen on Good Friday (April 14). If bad weather does hit, the Gardens will remain closed for safety reasons.

For those unfamiliar with the grounds, the main gate is located at the corner of Spring Garden Road and South Park Street. Other public gates are positioned at the corner of South Park and Sackville streets; the corner of Sackville and Summer streets; and the corner of Summer Street and Spring Garden Road.

Gates will be open daily at 8 a.m., from April to mid-November. Gates will close each day a half hour before dusk.

The Gardens has some exciting events planned for this season:

  • Concert Series from June 11 to Sept. 17, from 2-4 p.m.
  • Canada Day Concerts
  • Mayor’s Garden Party – Aug. 5
  • Dahlia Days Sept. 8 and 9
  • Nocturne – Oct. 14

In an effort to preserve the Gardens for future generations, visitors are asked to respect the rules prohibiting pets, bicycles, and jogging inside the gates. Visitors are also asked to refrain from feeding the waterfowl, as it makes them dependent upon an unnatural food supply and may interfere with their natural migratory patterns in the fall and spring.

The Public Gardens was established in 1874 through the amalgamation of two older gardens: the Nova Scotia Horticultural Society Garden, laid out in 1837, and an adjacent public park that opened in 1866. The existing Public Gardens was recognized as a National Historic Site in 1984 and is now widely regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of Victorian Gardens in North America.
