Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency launches historic recruitment drive

Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE) is launching its first-ever volunteer recruitment drive on the peninsula.

The fire service is seeking 20 volunteers to work out of the Lady Hammond Road fire station (Station 4). The successful recruits will begin training next spring.

While the fire service is constantly recruiting for new members at many of its rural stations, this is the first time volunteers will be able to sign up in the Halifax urban core.

This recruitment drive comes after Regional Council direction earlier this year to open the doors to volunteer firefighters at the Lady Hammond Road station and Dartmouth’s King Street station (Station 13).

Due to limitations on training class sizes, recruitment efforts will begin first for the Lady Hammond Road station, and continue next year for the King Street station.

HRFE staff will be holding an information session tomorrow (Wednesday) evening for anyone interested in volunteering at any of the 28 fire stations currently seeking recruits.

What: Volunteer firefighter recruit information session
Where: St. Stephen’s School – 3669 Highland Ave., Halifax
When: Wednesday, Oct. 5
Time: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Eligibility rules stipulate Lady Hammond Road volunteers must live within a six-minute drive of the fire station.

For other eligibility rules and the online application form, check out the volunteer recruitment page.

The deadline to apply for a volunteer position at the Lady Hammond Road station is Sunday, Oct. 16.
