Halifax Regional Police, RCMP Issue June Traffic Unit Update

In their continued effort to address traffic safety issues and educate citizens on the rules of the road, the HRP/RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit will focus on speeding enforcement and impaired driving during the month of June.

With the warmer weather and the school year drawing to a close, the Traffic Unit encourages citizens to watch their speed and be aware of cyclists, pedestrians and children playing near the street. Motorists are reminded that the faster you drive, the less time you have to react.

The Traffic Unit will also conduct checkpoints throughout the region to ensure that drivers on our roadways are sober and educated on the dangers of getting behind the wheel while impaired. Driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs puts everyone in danger. In December 2009, MADD Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia launched Campaign 9-1-1 which encourages people to call police with information on suspected impaired drivers. HRP/RCMP Partners in Policing continue to be encouraged by the number of citizens helping to play a role in community safety. If you have information on an impaired driver, please call 9-1-1.

The Unit’s focus during May was motorcycle and bicycle safety awareness. Patrol officers issued 2,156 Summary Offence Tickets, including 356 by the Traffic Unit, during the month of May for a variety of Motor Vehicle Act violations.
