Halifax Regional Police Voluntary Surrender Initiative

Halifax Regional Police held its second Voluntary Surrender event on Saturday, October 28, at the Captain William Spry Community Centre. The event was an opportunity for people with outstanding warrants for non-violent offences to resolve the warrants voluntarily in a neutral environment.

While twelve people attended the first event in April, resulting in 19 warrants being resolved, this most recent event didn’t yield the same results as no one attended.

“We’re disappointed in the turnout but we’re also proud that we offer this opportunity to the community with the support of Nova Scotia Legal Aid, the Public Prosecution Service and 211,” says Inspector Don Moser. “We’re the first to do so in Canada and we’re very much still in the exploratory stages of the initiative.”

Though people with outstanding warrants can turn themselves in at any of HRP’s locations at any time, the Voluntary Surrender initiative provided another option for people to resolve outstanding warrants.
