Halifax Regional Police Welcome New Police Service Dog

Halifax Regional Police are set to welcome a new police dog to the department.

Morgan is the newest canine to join Halifax Regional Police. He’s currently completing his police training and is scheduled to be sworn-in this December. A one-year-old German shepherd, Morgan is a general service dog with a speciality in explosives detection. He will serve alongside his partner, Cst. Phil MacDonald, whose current canine, Steeler, is retiring at the end of the year.

Morgan is the namesake of the late Cst. Joseph Ronald (Ron) Morgan. Cst. Morgan’s passion for German shepherds and his dedication to serving will be memorialized by the newest addition to the K-9 Unit. “My husband was a certified trainer and handler of police dogs for years, and I’m sure he’d be honoured by this kind gesture,” said Sheila Morgan.

“The service dogs in the K-9 Unit are truly an integral part of our police service, searching for both people and evidence in a multitude of scenarios,” said Chief Blais. “We’re so proud that he has the name of one of our retired officers. It’s a way to honour the memory of Cst. Ron Morgan and share a little history about his service with the police.”
