This year’s recipient of the Nova Scotia Council of the Federation Literacy Award is a graduate of the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), receiving her high school diploma for adults in 2017.
Samia Eldik received the award, today, Sept. 10, during a presentation ceremony at Province House, in Halifax. The award is presented annually to an adult learner who demonstrates outstanding achievements in literacy, and makes a significant contribution to their school, workplace or community.
“I know that I’ve worked hard to get to where I am today, but I never expected to be recognized for my hard work,” said Ms. Eldik. “I’m thankful for all the opportunities to learn and for all the help I have received, it makes me want to continue to work hard to reach my goal.”
Ms. Eldik came to Canada from Sudan in 2003. As a child, she didn’t have the opportunity to attend school and after coming to Canada she faced challenges like learning English and caring for her five children. Upon becoming a Canadian citizen in 2013, she promised herself that if she got the chance to learn, she would do her best.
“The more I learn, the more I want to learn. Literacy classes have helped me realize that learning is a very important part of my life.”
While obtaining her diploma from NSCC, Ms. Eldik received tutoring and support from the Halifax Community Learning Network. She is currently enrolled in the Continuing Care program at NSCC and looks forward to becoming a continuing care assistant.
“Ms. Eldik’s story shows the success that can be achieved when we come together to support lifelong learning,” said Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab, who presented the award on behalf of Premier Stephen McNeil. “I congratulate her on receiving this award and continuing her education here in Nova Scotia.”
Thirteen Council of the Federation Literacy Awards are presented annually, one for each province and territory. The Department of Labour and Advanced Education, on behalf of Premier Stephen McNeil, co-ordinates the annual Council of the Federation Literacy Award for Nova Scotia.
