Halifax Transit is once again asking residents to submit suggestions to name its newest replacement harbour ferry vessels, expected to be delivered in fall 2017 and summer 2018.
Beginning today, until Friday, April 14, residents can submit their name ideas for the two new replacement vessels online at www.halifax.ca/surveys.
Halifax Transit and Corporate Communications staff will review all submissions and narrow them down to a short list based on appropriateness, originality, cultural significance and diversity. A selection committee comprised of Mayor Mike Savage and one member from each of the three community councils will then develop a final list of names from which residents can vote for their favourite.
The top two names receiving the most votes will adorn the new ferries, subject to final approval by Transport Canada. The residents who submit the winning names will each receive a one-year conventional transit pass courtesy of Halifax Transit and the municipality.
The new ferries are being added to replace aging infrastructure in the fleet and will help bring more continuity and efficiency to Halifax Transit’s harbour ferry service. The Christopher Stannix vessel launched in 2014 was the first new ferry to be added to the fleet in over 25 years, and the Craig Blake went into service in the summer 2015.
Last year, in the third edition of the ferry-naming contest, residents voted to name the newest replacement harbour ferry “Viola Desmond”. The Viola Desmond was launched in the summer of 2016.
These two new ferries are being purchased with federal funding support under the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund.
