MEDIA RELEASE
Municipal Auditor General Files Audit Report on Halifax Water’s SCADA System (Halifax – Thursday, March 23, 2023) – Today, the Municipal Auditor General released an Audit Report on Halifax Water’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. As a part of this report, gaps were identified in both the utility’s cyber security and physical security policies and procedures. Halifax Water has reviewed the Municipal Auditor General’s report, accepted the findings and acknowledged that the information enables the utility to be better prepared to respond to cyber emergencies and make its infrastructure much more secure. “As a municipal-owned utility, we are committed to protecting our critical infrastructure and information systems. We continually work to safeguard our infrastructure and information technology systems, but there is always room for improvement. We take the Municipal Auditor General’s findings very seriously and will now take the time needed to address the remainder in a financially and operationally prudent way,” says Louis de Montbrun, Acting General Manager and CEO of Halifax Water. Halifax Water has already addressed some of the items identified. Still, given the sensitivity and potential risks to the utility’s systems and to protect the best interest of our customers, no specific details of the utility’s response plan will be disclosed. –
