Halifax Water PSA – Impact of Province of Nova Scotia Data Breach on Halifax Water Customers

Impact of Province of Nova Scotia Data Breach on Halifax Water Customers
(June 12, 2023) The Province of Nova Scotia notified Halifax Water that some of its customer’s information was included in a data privacy breach. As a result of this breach, a Halifax Water data file that is commonly transferred through the provincial IT network was compromised. The preliminary review shows that approximately 25,000 account numbers and names were exposed. No additional personal or financial records were exposed, which means there is not enough information to gain access to a customer account. As a precaution, Halifax Water ceased using the Province’s file-sharing network until we were able to confirm that a new secure version was in place. We also want to assure our customers that this event has not impacted Halifax Water’s ability to provide water, wastewater or stormwater services. We will continue to work closely with the Province of Nova Scotia on this. Our priority is protecting the privacy and security of our customer data.
