L-A: By now, you’re used to us bitching about winter. It gets cold, we get lazy and then we whine about it. But seriously, who wants to think about looking cute when it’s cold and still dark outside in the morning. Not us, that’s for sure.
But there is one thing that makes us want to be a little less lazy this winter: the Oval.
Can I get a hells yes?
Reasons I love the oval?
- Not only did it get my lazy arse skating around for a few hours (and gave my knee an amazing bruise. But I wear purple well), it makes me want to think of a cute outfit to wear skating. outside.
- This song. On repeat. In my head.
- It reminds me of when I was a kid and we’d go skating on the Rideau Canal. (beaver tails and hot chocolate, bitches. That’s where it’s at).
- One of my dreams is to go skating in Central Park. It’s going to happen, but in the meantime, I get to go skating in my own city. Whenever I want. Which may actually be awesomer. I mean, just look at this sappy montage of cute winter fashions. Even if you hate corny movies & shearling coats, you totally want this to be you:
But back to item number one: cute outfits! In winter! Anything that can make me excited to put a coat on and go outdoors is a small miracle. So, other than legwarmers (which I totally support when skating. This rare that I support the legwarmer. Guest Blogger Jo may take this moment to gloat) let’s see what’s out there in the way of cute skating wear:
Okay, maybe not totally Oval appropriate. But how much do you want to see that outfit out on the ice in Halifax? I bet the answer is something along the lines of, “Holy shit! Do I ever!!”. But seriously, my must haves for Ovaltime include an adorable coat, comme ça:
Add the following to that super sweet coat and what do you get?
You get the most adorable skating outfit in the city, that’s what.
Actually, I’ll be honest with you: I didn’t wear my cutest coat out skating. Mostly because when I’ve gone it’s jeezly cold outside and then when I worked up to getting warm, I wasn’t fond of the idea of sweating in a cute coat. But I did accessorize with adorable hat and mittens from Kate Spade. And a cute scarf. Because even if you’re not in the market for a new skating wardrobe, you can upgrade your scarf to something cuter. Like this one:
We’re hoping the Oval sticks around. Because that way we can make plans for next winter (I’m already thinking about new cute winter coats. And I just bought one in December). And we’re excited to see what the city can do with the Oval in non-winter weather (you know I’m voting for roller derby space). If you think the Oval is a good idea, then you should maybe think about telling the city that you’d like to Save the Oval. Even if you are just doing it to look cute. No one said it has to be for a more noble cause (then again, what’s more noble than wanting to look cute in a public space?).
And, if you already have a super cute outfit for skating, maybe you want to share it with us and the rest of the interwebs? If you do, totally send a photo on over to fashionablepeople [at] gmail.com. We’ll call it the “Hey Halifax! Why Don’t You Look Cute in Winter!” Challenge (or maybe we’ll think of something catchier). Challenge participants can have us score their outfits like the French figure skating judges that we aspire to be.
