Heading out on the water?

The 2012 boating season is underway and the Nova Scotia RCMP remind boaters and water enthusiasts to ensure safety is top of mind before heading out on the water.

Every year there are tragedies on our waters that result in death or serious injury. The majority of tragedies are preventable if you take the appropriate safety precautions.

May 19th to 25th is National Safe Boating week. If you are a boater, diver, angler, hunter or water sports enthusiast, here are some important tips to be aware of:

– Plan ahead. Check the weather forecast to ensure you have the proper clothing and safety equipment for the elements;

– Tell a friend or family member your plans including the time you are departing, the location and when you intend to return;

– Do not drink and boat;

– Take a cell phone with you and ensure the battery is fully charged;

– Carry the required safety equipment for your boat such as paddles, a bailer, flashlight, buoyant line, anchor, etc;

– Watch for swimmers, divers etc. in the area where you are boating;

– Take a boating course. Carry your Pleasure Craft Operators Card (boat license) on you at all times. This card is recognized across North America;

– Make sure you wear a life jacket or a personal flotation device;

– Enroll in First Aid/CPR training;

– Have fun but remember to stay safe!
