Here’s what’s happening at the Bedford Public Library

Turkish Books Donated-Halifax Public Libraries is pleased to have received a donation of about 20 books in Turkish from the Turkish Society of Nova Scotia. The library now has over 75 books in Turkish, both for children and adults, most of which have come from the Turkish Society of Nova Scotia.

Borrow Anywhere, Return Anywhere-Borrowing and returning library materials just got easier thanks to a new partnership between Nova Scotia public, community college and university libraries. Now you can access materials from over one hundred libraries across the province. Materials can be returned at any participating library. It’s free, easy and convenient. Book Clubs-The library’s book club is a great way to meet new people, explore new authors and share reading ideas.

Health and Wellness-Understanding Anxiety-Anxiety comes in many forms. Learn ways to deal with anxiety and achieve better mental health. Registration required, call 490-5757. Presented by Capital Health.

Computer Basics-An introduction to computers. No experience required.
Monday, November 9, 10 a.m. Registration begins November 3.

How to Navigate the Internet-An introduction to navigating the Internet and using a web browser. Prerequisite: Beyond the Basics or basic mouse, keyboard and Windows skills.
Saturday, November 21, 10 a.m. Registration begins November 3.

E-mail Basics-Learn to send, reply, forward and delete e-mail. Prerequisite: How to Navigate the Internet or familiarity using web brwsers.
Wednesday, November 30, 10 a.m. Registration  begins November 3.

English Language Learning (ELL)-Get help with your English language skills at volunteer tutor programs sponsored by Halifax Public Libraries and the Nova Scotia Department of Immigration.
The programs are free and open to:
-Permanent residents of Canada.
-Canadian citizens born outside of Canada (though services to recent immigrants to Nova Scotia will be given priority).
-Protected persons as defined in Section 95 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
-Foreign nationals temporarily residing in Nova Scotia who have been nominated (received Certificate of Nomination) under the Nova Scotia Nominee Program and their dependants.
Mondays, 1:30-4 p.m., Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Call 490-5757.

Volunteer Opportunities-About 12 million Canadian adults have trouble reading and writing. By becoming a volunteer tutor you can help someone in your community improve his or her basic literacy skills. No experience necessary and training and support are available. Call 490-5990 to register.

Teen ELL-Ages 13-18. Open to teens in need of help with their English language skills. For more information, call Tatjana at 490-5757. Co-sponsored by the Cobequid Community Health Board.
Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Wii Tournament Season-Ages 13-19. Show off your Dance Dance Revolution moves at the second tournament of the season. Winners of each event will qualify for the championship in March, with great prizes like a Nintendo DS and an iPod shuffle. Everyone will get several chances to play.
Saturday, December 19, 1-4 p.m.

Open Mic Night-Share a short story, poem, dance or song, or just come to watch. Snacks will be provided. Registration required for performers, call 490-5757.

Do you read books, magazines or graphic novels?-Maybe you follow sports, music, fashion, gaming, celebrities or world events online? Tell the library Y you read for a weekly chance to win a $25 gift card to your favourite mall.

Duck Your Fines Bingo-Do you have library fines you’d like wiped out? Or, maybe you’d just love to win a rubber ducky? Then pick up a Duck Your Fines bingo card or print one from halifaxpubliclibraries.ca.
How to play: Complet bingo lines by doing activities at the library. See staff to get your fines reduced and receive rubber duck prizes. Choose from a selection of themed ducks including pirates, cowboys, ballerinas, superheroes, ninjas and more.

teenrc-Write a book review for teenrc.ca this November for a chance to win a sweet prize package! If you like to read, connect with other teen readers at teerc.ca-Canada’s online reading club for teens. Share books you’re reading, get suggestions and participate in chats. To celebrate Teen Read Week, you could win a $25 Chapters gift card, books, treats from Freak Lunchbox and teenrc swag. Reviewers who post between now and June 30 will also be entered in a grand-prize draw-a book-buying trip and cafe outing for themselves and a friend.

Puppet Making Workshop-Ages 10-12. Create your own glorified sock puppet in this workshop lead by puppet creator Diann MacDonald.
Saturday, November 21, 2-4 p.m.

Paw to Read-Grades 1-5. Does your child need encouragement to read? Maybe a reading therapy dog can help. Reading therapy dogs and their handlers are trained volunteers ceritified by Therapeutic Paws of Canada. Paws to Read matches children who have trouble reading with an audience that won’t judge their reading skills. Children have fun and gain confidence reading to an excellent listener.
Tuesdays, 3:30-5 p.m. October 27-November 17.

Baby’s First Books-Ages 0-35 months. Join the adventure as you listen to stories, learn new songs and share in interactive play.
Tuesdays, 10:15-10:45 a.m. until November 17.

Salut! Groupe de jew en francais-De 0-5 ans. Enfants et parents francophones, venez vous amusez a l’aide de livres, jouets et autres resources en francais. Le programme se deroule entierement en francais.les mardis, 11:15 a.m.- 12 p.m. 3, 10 et 17 novembre.

Storytime-Stories, songs, finger-plays and rhymes help children in this program gain pre-reading skills and develop a love of reading. Fridays, 10:30 a.m. until November 20.

Puppet Shows-All ages (unless indicated). Puppet shows bring favourite stories to life!
