Herring Cove Road bicycle lane proposal stirs controversy

HRM is proposing roadwork on Herring Cove Road which has stirred up some controversy in the community. The HRM proposal would reduce the road from our lanes to two, and install bicycle lanes instead.

In an open letter to The Chebucto News, Bruce Holland, the executive director of the Spryfield and District Business Commission says, “we truly believe that the reduction of the current four lane configuration down to two will dramatically restrict the flow of traffic and cause major traffic back ups.”

However, Steve Bedard of the Halifax Cycling Coalition supports the bicycle lanes, saying that Herring Cove road is at “overcapacity” right now, and that road capacity reports done by the city indicate that there will only be a slowdown of a few seconds.

The Chebucto News reports that the proposed changes will apply between Old Sambro Road and Arthur street.
