Hitman Scam

Halifax Regional Police is warning the public about a scam that surfaced recently in Halifax.

In the last week, HRM Partners in Policing have received numerous complaints from citizens who were contacted by a suspect via text messages. The suspect stated that he was hired to kill the complainant but would hold off if the complainants send him a large amount of money overseas. There was no indication that the suspect had specific information about the complainant and it appears that the texts originated from abroad. There are no reports of money being lost to the scammers at this time.

Although this scam came in the form of a text message, police across North America have seen similar scams coming through email, phone calls and conventional mail. These messages originate from scammers that are trying to take your money or are attempting to obtain personal information to steal your identity.

If you believe you are the victim of any scam, please contact the HRP/RCMP Integrated Financial Crime Unit at 490-1985. You can also file a complaint online at https://www.halifax.ca/police/NonDispatch/index.html
