Fire Prevention & Safety
Holiday fire safety tips
12 days of holiday fire safety
1st day: Check lights for damage before decorating and make sure they are CSA and ULC approved
2nd day: Water fresh Christmas trees daily and keep them away from any heat source
3rd day: Make sure your chimney is safe before use. Dispose of ashes safely. Heating equipment is the second leading cause of fire during the holidays and should be inspected and cleaned annually
4th day: Do not overload electrical outlets
5th day: Cooking and alcohol don’t mix. Be extra attentive to cooking while entertaining this holiday season
6th day: Keep tree, boughs, and stockings away from a lit fireplace
7th day: When lighting candles this holiday remember to put matches and lighters away, out of reach of children
8th day: Always use caution with smoking materials, especially if you have been drinking alcohol or taking medication
9th day: Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives. Test yours regularly
10th day: Remember to blow out any candles when you leave the room, or try using LED candles. They are safer for children and pets.
11th day: While entertaining, remember to watch what you are cooking. Unattended cooking is a major cause of home fires
12th day: While celebrating over the holidays, take a cab, use transit, or have a designated driver. You don’t want to make the fire department your last call
