Hollis Street bike lane construction begins

Friday, Aug. 7, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – Construction work on the Hollis Street bike lane begins Monday, Aug. 10.

This project is the last piece of the overall downtown street network improvement plan, which aims to improve traffic flow, increase the number of on-street parking spaces, and add marked bicycle lanes.

Public consultation took place last summer on the proposed Hollis Street bike lane and several good suggestions were provided to municipal staff. Many of those suggestions were incorporated in the final design.

Features of the bicycle lane include:

  • The lane will be on the left (east) side of Hollis Street and will include a 0.6m (2-foot) painted buffer area between the bicycle lane and the vehicle lane
  • There will be no stopping in the bicycle lane during peak hours (7-9 a.m., and 4-6 p.m.)
  • Parking meters on the right (west) side of the street will remain and some may be added. All accessible parking spaces are currently located on the right side of Hollis Street and will also remain.
  • There will be a new stop sign on Hollis Street at Terminal Road, which will help with traffic control for cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians

The Hollis Street bike lane will flow from north to south from just south of Cogswell Street to Terminal Road.

Construction work will begin Monday along Hollis Street between Salter Street and Terminal Road.

No anticipated road closures are expected during this first phase of the two-phase project but motorists can anticipate some delays and interruptions along that section of Hollis Street.

The Hollis Street bike lane project is anticipated to take about four weeks to complete.

Further PSAs will be issued once the work progresses to other sections of Hollis Street.
