Nineteen firefighter recruits have been busy training over the past 14 weeks, and are now ready to be rewarded with their black helmets.

It’s noteworthy this class of 19 was expanded from the normal class of 16 in order to meet Regional Council’s direction to boost the overall complement of firefighters in the service.

This class of recruit grads boasts a broad range of former occupations, including: paramedicine, correctional services, musical performance, farming, banking, athletic services, welding, retail services, and industrial engineering.

One graduate was even a member of the firefighter Union Fire Club Pipes & Drums unit. The class truly reflects the community they will soon be serving.

Also of note, five graduates did receive their black helmets from their fathers, who are either current or former firefighters.

All 19 recruits will begin work next week at various E-Platoon stations across the municipality, from Sheet Harbour to Black Point.
