HRM looks for input on massive 14-building Strawberry Hill residential development

Files via release:

The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is calling on residents to help shape the future of the Strawberry Hill Future Growth Node (FGN). Public open house sessions are being held to gather community input, which will play a crucial role in the comprehensive planning process for the area. These sessions are set for Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the Halifax Forum, Maritime Hall, located at 2901 Windsor Street. Residents can drop in during the afternoon session from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. or the evening session from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No registration is required, and both sessions will present the same information.

Development proposals for the Strawberry Hill Future Growth Node include:

  • 14 multi-unit buildings ranging from 8 to 42 storeys as part of the Fathom Studios proposal.
  • Additional submissions for high-rise buildings by Killam Properties and other single-lot developments, but the specific number of buildings from these proposals isn’t detailed in the provided excerpt.

In total, the main proposal mentions 14 multi-unit buildings, with other high-rise developments also being considered, though the exact count beyond the Fathom Studios proposal is not specified.

Strawberry Hill has been designated as a key area for growth under the Centre Plan, which targets large sites that can support significant development. The plan aims to create a comprehensive neighbourhood strategy considering environmental, social, cultural, and economic factors. With major development anticipated, the city emphasizes the importance of ensuring necessary social, transportation, municipal services, and utility infrastructure are in place to support both existing and future communities. Since the planning process began on March 26, 2024, several development proposals have been submitted, including high-rise buildings with mixed residential, commercial, and institutional uses.

HRM stresses the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of Strawberry Hill. “We want to hear the community’s ideas and vision for Strawberry Hill,” said a spokesperson from HRM. “Your feedback will help us better understand the community’s preferences and priorities for the area.” The city encourages residents to attend the open house sessions to share their thoughts and help ensure the development meets the needs of both current and future residents.
