HRM Partners in Policing release Impaired Driving statistics from the month of January, Halifax Regional Municipality, N.S.

RCMP/Halifax Regional Police charged 50 drivers with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle in January 2014. An additional 17 drivers were issued driving suspensions for operating a motor vehicle having consumed alcohol.

Of these drivers, 55 were male, 12 were female, and ages ranged from 18 to 62 years of age. Nine drivers were identified at motor vehicle collisions and 45 drivers were detected at traffic stops (Traffic stops are made up of officer initiated checks and/or calls from the public). Another 13 drivers were found impaired at checkpoints.

Officers were able to detect and charge persons at a wide range of BAC’s from 90-320 mg%. Eight of the charged persons were more than two times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 ml of blood and four drivers were more than three times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. One driver was four times the legal limit. Twelve of the impaired drivers refused to provide samples and were charged with the offence of refusal.

HRM Partners in Policing encourage citizens to keep our roads safe by calling 911 if you believe someone is driving while impaired. Members of the public alerted police to 24 possible impaired drivers.
