HRM Partners in Policing release Impaired Driving statistics from the month of May, Halifax, N.S.

RCMP/Halifax Regional Police charged 41 drivers with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle in May 2014. Two of these drivers were charged operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drug.

An additional six drivers were issued driving suspensions for operating a motor vehicle having consumed alcohol. Of these drivers, 37 were male, 10 were female, and ages ranged from 18 to 54 years of age. Ten drivers were identified at motor vehicle collisions and 21 drivers were detected at traffic stops. 911 calls were received from the public resulted in ten impaired driving charges, a driver’s suspension and three calls were unfounded. Another six drivers were found impaired at checkpoints.

Officers were able to detect and charge persons at a wide range of BAC’s from 90-300 mg%. Eight of the charged persons were more than two times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 ml of blood and four drivers were more than three times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. One driver was five times the legal limit. Seven of the impaired drivers refused to provide samples and were charged with the offence of refusal.
