(November 26, 2010) – Next week, the proposed community solar project,
HRM-Solar City, will host information sessions on Monday, November 29th
in Sackville and Wednesday, December 1st in Halifax from 6 p.m. to 8
p.m. The Sackville session will be held at the Sackville Heights
Community Centre and the Halifax session at the Saint Mary’s Boat
Club. A full list of all the sessions is found below.
On November 2nd, Regional Council granted approval for HRM staff to
proceed with next steps to develop the project proposal. These sessions
are part of the process of finalizing the pilot project proposal to
present to Council early in the New Year.
If approved by Council, the proposed community solar project would help
residents take advantage of the municipality’s significant solar
energy potential without having to become an expert in the technology or
navigate the technical and financing options.
Through the proposed pilot program, between 500 and 700 HRM homeowners
would be eligible to sign-up on a first come, first serve basis, to have
two solar hot water panels installed on their property. They would repay
the cost for panels and installation as a supplement to their tax bill.
The information sessions will give participants an opportunity to learn
more about the program and speak directly with HRM staff. If there is
sufficient interest, formal pre-screening registration will be accepted
beginning on December 15th.
An updated project plan will be submitted for final Regional Council
approval early in the New Year.
