In April, citizens and Halifax Regional Police joined forces to continue the fight against drinking and driving.

Throughout the month, police charged 34 people, 20 men and 14 woman ranging in age from 19 to 68, with impaired driving, and issued an additional six 24-hour suspensions.

Of the 34 people charged criminally, 19 were under the age of 25. In 15 cases the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was at least twice the legal limit of 80%mg.

Of the 40 incidents, 19 were initiated by police during traffic stops and check points, seven involved collisions and 14 were called in by concerned citizens.

Halifax Regional Police thanks those people who called 911 with information that helped us get dangerous drivers off our roads.

One incident of note involved a call about a woman driving with her children. The woman was reportedly impaired. She was located and arrested and her subsequent breath tests indicated a blood alcohol concentration in excess of 200mg%. The children were not harmed.

Drinking and driving puts everyone in danger.

In December 2009 MADD Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia launched Campaign 911, which encourages people to call police with information on a suspected impaired driver.
