A celebrity sighting rumour is making the rounds in Halifax this weekend, with speculation that Hollywood stars and sports team owners Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds could be in town for SailGP on the harbour.

Jackman and Reynolds became co-owners of Australia’s SailGP team, the BONDS Flying Roos, back in 2025, and they have been heavily involved in promoting the team and the league ever since. The Deadpool and Wolverine co-stars are no strangers to splashy sports ownership, and their team is one of the big storylines coming into Halifax. The Flying Roos arrive sitting at the top of the 2026 standings, 11 points clear of second place, riding three straight event wins.

But the team Halifax will really be roaring for flies a Canadian flag. The host nation’s NorthStar SailGP Team is racing on home water this weekend, and no crew will draw more local noise. The Canadians are led by driver Giles Scott, with Halifax’s own Billy Gooderham aboard as flight controller, a genuine hometown hero who told us he could still hear the crowd roar through his noise-cancelling earbuds at race speed. NorthStar comes into the weekend with momentum too, fresh off reaching their first event final of the season in New York at the end of May. Another reason giving this rumour credibility: Reynolds has already shown he’ll suit up in person. Back in May he climbed aboard the Flying Roos’ F50 in Bermuda for a sixth-sailor ride and a practice race, flew across the water at close to 90 km/h, and came away raving about it. Days later, Disney+ announced a docuseries on the team. So these aren’t owners who only watch from a couch in LA. With their team out front in the standings and a film crew rolling, a home-style harbour stop like ours is exactly the kind of weekend that already pulled Reynolds onto the boat once this season.

So treat the celebrity rumour as a maybe, not a sighting. Keep one eye on the racing and one eye on the VIP areas and any camera crews. Either way you get the fastest boats in the world tearing across the harbour, with Canada’s own crew right in the mix.
