I think Halifax needs a new country bar…
Maybe you don’t think country is cool. Whatever. But I bet you know all the words to Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton.
I’ve come to realize that we have a pretty strong alt-country, Americana, roots type scene here in Halifax but not much of a club scene to support it.
Wouldn’t it be good if urban cowboys and cowgirls could gather in a space big enough to hold them that’s not all about line dancing?
Somewhere in between the heehaw drink up environment and the intimate acoustic performance we need a happy medium in my opinion. We have lots of places like this for Celtic music but that’s not the only kind of music East Coasters like.
There are a few places around town that could work and try from time to time, but it seems to me like so many clubs frankly have terrible sound systems. The old model of crank it up really loud at the front of the bar so the people in the back of the room can hear it doesn’t really create optimal sound.
If the bars are saying there is no profit margin in serving alcohol why do they make that the focus of their business? Push some fancy coffees and better snacks. And no there is not one thing in the world wrong with beer and nachos…one of my very favorite things…might go out for some tonight in fact.
Anyway I love music as most of us do. I want to hear it, but also be social. Sometimes I like to gather with my friends and be able to talk and eat and move around but also be respectful of the band. Lots of people feel the same way. And country music is super popular just not everyone likes top ten country or old time country. Just a little outside the box is nice once in a while.
There is a scene…we just need a space. And maybe some of the people who usually aren’t as musically adventurous could discover some new acts too. Like why listen to the same things over and over again? I’m just saying…
