Ice Ice Baby: The Oval opens for 2022/23

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that the Emera Oval, located on the Halifax Commons, has opened for the 2022/23 winter season.

Every year, the Emera Oval is transformed into the largest outdoor, artificially refrigerated ice service east of Quebec City. The skating surface is equivalent to the size of three NHL hockey rinks, and the facility includes an accessible washroom, on-street accessible parking located on Cogswell Street, and wheelchair access to the ice surface.

Free equipment rentals, including skates and helmets, will be available – along with select adaptive equipment. Valid ID is required for all rentals. CSA-approved multi-impact hockey helmets are mandatory for children 12 years of age and younger; however, all skaters are encouraged to wear a helmet for their own safety.

There will be no capacity restrictions on the Oval this season, and residents are not required to reserve a spot in advance. Organized group bookings for between 20 and 75 people must be made at least two weeks in advance. Visit our Group Bookings webpage for more information.

The municipality will also host a Skate with Santa on Thursday, Dec. 22 during the 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. public stake. Residents are invited to come and skate to holiday music, enjoy complimentary candy canes and take a picture with Santa Claus.

A full schedule of public skate times can be found on halifax.ca/emeraoval.
