Impaired driving a factor in three car accident

RCMP North East Traffic Services is investigating a three vehicle head-on collision, where alcohol is believed to have been a factor, that occurred on Hwy 125 in Sydney Mines.

At approximately 6:40 p.m. on March 8, RCMP, Cape Breton Regional Police, fire and EHS responded to a report of a collision on Hwy 125 in Sydney Mines. Police learned that a westbound car struck an east bound car head on, causing the east bound car to lose control and strike an east bound SUV head on. All three vehicles sustained frontend damage and came to rest on the roadway, blocking the highway.

The driver of the westbound car, a 42-year-old Cape Breton County woman, and the driver of the eastbound car, an 81-year-old Cape Breton County man, suffered serious injuries and were transported to hospital. The woman had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Sydney Mines Fire Department and was showing signs of impairment. The driver of the SUV was uninjured.

Both east and west bound lanes of Hwy 125 were closed at the Hwy 105 overpass, but have since reopened.

The investigation is ongoing and police are continuing to gather information and evidence related to this incident.
