In photos: NS school lunch program kicks off

Via Provincial releases:

Today, the first lunches were served at 28 schools across Nova Scotia as part of the province’s new School Lunch Program. Among the schools that kicked off the program was St. Anne’s Elementary School in Glace Bay, where students enjoyed their first nutritious, pay-what-you-can meals, captured in the photos.

The program aims to provide affordable and healthy lunch options to over 75,000 elementary students. Families can choose what to contribute towards the $6.50 cost, ensuring all children have access to nutritious meals without financial barriers. The diverse rotating menu includes options like butter chicken, traditional Mi’kmaq corn chowder, and student favorites like pizza.

This initiative, which complements existing free breakfast and snack programs, will continue rolling out to other schools throughout October. Families can place orders via nslunch.ca, with two daily options available, including vegetarian choices. Education Minister Becky Druhan emphasized the importance of feeding students well to enhance their learning experience and support Nova Scotia families.
