Information Meeting on New Dartmouth Skateboard Park

Thursday, May 21, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – Residents are invited to attend a public information meeting next Wednesday, May 27, to learn more about a long-awaited new skateboard park in Dartmouth.

There are currently 11 skateboard parks in the Halifax region, including a smaller site on Caledonia Road. Members of the local skate community have long been pushing for the municipality to build a larger skateboard park in Dartmouth that would serve people from around the region.

Staff members in Parks & Recreation worked closely with the Dartmouth Skate Coalition on the development of a skateboard park on the Dartmouth Common, across from the Dartmouth Sportsplex. This location was chosen following a site selection process that began in 2012.

In 2014, the municipality issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to design and build the new facility. The winning proponent was the world renowned skateboard park designers at Grindline, who will partner with a well-known local contracting firm, Ocean Contractors, to build the new park.

The public information meeting will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the Valardo Room at the Dartmouth Sportsplex, 110 Wyse Rd. Representatives from the municipality and Grindline will present information about the project’s background, the proposed design and next steps, and will be available for questions afterward.

Construction on the new skateboard park will begin in June and it is anticipated the facility will be ready to use later this summer.
