Injury and Run Update

So I’m still a bit injured.  My ankle is still sore and a bit swollen but I AM healing.

I’ve been doing the R.I.C.E. method every day for the past week and taking it easy, but me being me, couldn’t sit still and I decided I’d go play hockey on Sunday.  My thinking was “hey, I’ll be in a skate which will support my ankle and I’ll be fine” all the while forgetting that I’m a goalie and that I need to be able to push from side to side to get across my net to make the save.  Try doing that without putting any pressure on your ankles.  Dumbass.  Back to rest, ice, compression and elevation, I went.

Tuesday night was dodgeball again and as long as I didn’t move my ankle from side to side or back and forth or up and down, it didn’t hurt so off to dodgeball I went.  You can still play dodgeball without moving your ankle, right?  Whether you can or should, I did.  I managed to play pain free but afterward it was pretty tender and swollen again.  AHHHHH, RICE!

Wednesday was Team Myles training; Hill Sprints.  Run up the hill 6 times (walking down) and when you’re done ,rest for a minute,  and then run up a seventh time and do two laps around the hill (1km each lap).  Are you kidding me?

The first six hill sprints were awesome!  Burning quads.  Short of breath.  I friggin’ KILLED those hill sprints without any pain.  I was S-T-O-K-E-D!  As I did the seventh sprint, I decided to taunt my 16 year old training buddy Liam and egg him on to a race… … … Word of advice: Don’t try and race someone 15 years younger than you up a hill when you have an ankle injury.  Not only did I gas myself for the upcoming two laps around the hill, I also re-injure my ankle and he beat me by about ten feet and made me feel like an old man.  I ended up only walking one lap around the hill and that was the end of my race training for the day.

I’m back to icing and the rest of the R.I.C.E. method until Saturday when I have a volleyball tournament.  I’m hoping taking it easy on it for the next two days will let me play because I haven’t played in a few months and I’m itching to get out there.  If everything goes well, I’m also hoping for a 7k or 8k run on Sunday.  I’m only 50 days away from my 10k race and with how my injuries have been going, I feel like I’ve taken a few steps back from my last long distance run of 7.5k a few weeks ago.
