International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Lower Sackville, N.S.

On Sunday, Nova Scotia RCMP will acknowledge the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by participating in a church service in Lower Sackville.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on March 21st.

It was on that day in 1960 that police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the Apartheid Pass Laws. Proclaiming the day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the International community to double its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.

This Sunday, Reverend Stewart Williams of the Lucasville United Baptist Church will be leading the congregation in a special service to recognize this significant day. People of all faiths and backgrounds are invited to attend and take part. The service begins at 11:00 a.m.
