Investment in Infrastructure at Nova Scotia Community College Lunenburg Campus

Nova Scotians will benefit from a $5.1 million investment that will replace the exterior wall system at Nova Scotia Community College Lunenburg Campus in Bridgewater.

The joint investment with the federal government was announced today, Oct. 7, by Business Minister Mark Furey, on behalf of Labour and Advanced Education Minister Kelly Regan.

“Improving the NSCC’s Lunenburg Campus is not only important for students, faculty and staff, but for the entire surrounding community,” said Mr. Furey. “NSCC campuses are hubs of learning and activity in communities and this investment will ensure campus facilities are reliable for years to come.”

The project will replace three quarters of the building’s external wall. Of the $5.1 million total investment, $3.1 million will come from the province, and $2 million from the federal government. Replacing the building’s wall system will increase energy efficiency by 60 per cent.

“Lunenburg is truly a community college campus that reaches far beyond its day-to-day mandate in the local area,” said NSCC president Don Bureaux. “The investment in the campus is, therefore, a valuable investment in our learners, community, and region.”

The federal funding is allocated through the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund which helps modernize research facilities on Canadian campuses and improves the environmental sustainability of these facilities.

“These infrastructure investments will create good, well-paying jobs that can help the middle class grow and prosper today, while also delivering sustained economic growth for years to come,” said South Shore-St. Margarets MP Bernadette Jordan, on behalf of Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains. “Through the Strategic Investment Fund, we are strengthening the foundation for building Canada into a global centre for innovation. Here at the NSCC Lunenburg Campus, this means that students from across the South Shore will be able to study and train for their future careers in a state-of-the-art environment.”

Overall Nova Scotia is contributing a total of $30 million as part of the Strategic Investment Fund, to support innovation and upgrades at colleges and universities.

Other projects were announced at Acadia University, Mount Saint Vincent University, Dalhousie University, and the Nova Scotia Community College campuses in Pictou and Dartmouth.
