It’s official: Uber announces intention to enter HRM market

Two years following the launch of Uber Eats, Uber Canada is excited to announce our intention to seek a license and launch our ridesharing app in Halifax before the end of the calendar year.

“We’ve long heard about the excitement for Uber in Halifax,” said Matthew Price, General Manager of Uber Canada.  “We look forward to providing Haligonians access to the same safe, affordable ride options and flexible earning opportunities that we do in over 10,000 cities across Canada and the globe.”


Door-to-Door Safety Standard
Once the app is available, riders and drivers will experience our  ‘Go Online Checklist’ and ‘No Mask. No Ride.’ amongst other safety features: 

• No Mask. No Ride.: With our ‘Go Online’ checklist, riders and drivers will have to confirm that they have taken certain steps to help stop the spread of COVID-19, including the confirmation that they are wearing a mask or face cover.  We’ve provided over 1.5m units of PPE to drivers in Canada so far.
• Mask Selfie Technology: When they go online for the day, drivers must verify they are wearing a mask or face cover with our proprietary mask selfie technology.  And for riders who have been flagged as not wearing a mask, they too will be required to take a selfie at the start of every future trip.
• Driver Screening: All drivers undergo ongoing screening processes, both before they take their first trip and as they continue to drive with Uber.
• Emergency Button: Riders and drivers can get assistance in urgent circumstances by calling 911 directly from the Uber app and sharing their GPS location and trip details with authorities.
• 24/7 Safety Support: Whenever riders and drivers need help in an urgent safety situation, they can call Uber’s trained 24/7 support team directly through the app.
• Phone Anonymization: To protect the privacy of riders and drivers, Uber’s technology conceals their phone number so they can call/text each other without seeing each other’s phone number.

Sign-up to Drive
To make the app available, qualified drivers are needed to register and complete the sign-up process at drive.uber.com.  

To be amongst the first to drive at launch, any interested drivers should bring a completed Driver’s Medical Examination to an Access Nova Scotia office to complete their Class 4 licence process as soon as possible. 

In addition to the Medical Exam and Class 4 license, drivers require the following to access the Uber platform: 

• The legal ability to work in Canada;
• Criminal record check;
• Child Abuse Registry Check; and a
• Vulnerable Sector Check
