Sun’s out, funk’s out: Weekly green bin collection begins

HRM release:

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that weekly green cart collection will begin Monday, July 21 and continue until Friday, September 12 in all communities across the municipality.

In past years, this enhanced service has run from July through September. During the 2025-26 budget process, Regional Council approved a shortened summer collection period.

Residents are asked to place materials curbside prior to 7 a.m. on collection day to guarantee pickup, ensuring items are contained and secured from wildlife. To find your collection schedule, visit our website.

With warmer weather on the way, here are some tips to help keep your green cart clean and reduce odors:

  • Wrap wet food waste in boxboard or a single sheet of newspaper
  • Line your mini-bin and green cart with paper bags
  • Empty your mini-bin daily
  • Place your green cart at the curb even if it’s not full
  • Freeze food waste until collection day
  • Store your cart in a cool, shaded and well-ventilated spot

Bi-weekly green cart collection will resume on Monday, September 15.

Printed copies of the collection schedule that were distributed before June 10 are not accurate and residents should refer to the Halifax Recycles app for the up-to-date schedule, or visit our website to find an updated schedule.
