IWK to launch pediatric clinic in Spryfield mall

As some people may have seen on cbc.ca, this week I worked on a story about a pilot program the IWK is launching which will send a pediatrician to the Community Wellness Centre to work alongside the family doctors there. Open File Halifax also picked up the story with info from OTC. The goal is to get specialist care back into the community, closer to where the patients live. I spoke to Dr. Heather Rose, who will be the first pediatrician to work in the clinic. Dr. Rose told me she's been learning the ropes, for example by doing a driving tour of the Spryfield area.  She told me these ideas used to be common 40 years ago: "The physician practices where the children are and is very knowledgeable about what the resources are that are available in the community. Knows the teachers in the community, knows the parenting supports that are in the community, and in order to do that you have to be IN the community." In other words, the doctors learn from each other and from the people in the neighbourhood. Dr. Rose will be at the clinic for six months, and then she will be succeeded by the person who has been hired to fill the position. That doctor is a young community pediatric resident, and she's just about to finish her training. The pilot project ends in December 2013 but if all goes well it might be extended. The clinic will be a place for other pediatric residents to learn this specialty, and Halifax has never had a training ground like this before. Dr. Rose told me: "Pediatric residents who are coming out of their training and looking to have a community practice have not been staying in the Halifax area to do that. They've been moving to other settings in the Maritimes or moving away from the Maritimes."Aaand now, the practical stuff! The clinic is at 16 Dentith Road in the South Centre Mall. Patients will be seen starting January 19, 2012, for general pediatric consultations.Fax referrals to 470-8137. For booking questions call 470-8043. The clinic will operate two days weekly (Thursday and Friday). It will take referrals for children who live in the greater Spryfield area (Postal codes B3N, B3R, B3V and B3P) or who have family physicians who practice in that area.  ...
