As part of our continued focus on pedestrian safety, Halifax Regional Police and Halifax District RCMP have release a monthly vehicle/pedestrian/bicycle collision report to provide police and citizens with more contextual information on this issue.
During the month of January, there were seventeen vehicle/pedestrian/bicycle collisions reported in Halifax. Of these collisions, two involved a bicycle, therefore a total of fifteen collisions were strictly vehicle/pedestrian. Month over month, this represents a decrease of 10 from the twenty-five incidents reported in December. Year over year, there was a decrease (-8 incidents) from the twenty-three incidents reported in January 2017.
This year in January, over fifty-three per cent (8 incidents) of vehicle/pedestrian collisions occurred in crosswalks compared to seventy-four per cent (17 incidents) in January last year.
A total of 16 pedestrians were involved in vehicle/pedestrian collisions in January, two of whom died as a result of their injuries. Two pedestrians experienced moderate injuries, six experienced minor injuries, and four reported receiving no injuries.
