Fire crews from Station 14 (Dartmouth) took to the ice earlier this afternoon to keep their ice rescue training fresh in mind as winter continues on.
Although the Halifax area has seen warmer temperatures and ice on some lakes has appeared slushy, people are still seen ice fishing, walking across or skating on our lakes. Fire crews are deployed in the case of a person falling through the ice, and they use a variety of tools in the course of a rescue.
By practicing techniques for the winter season, fire crews can respond effectively and quickly when time is of great importance.
Halifax Fire also train in aquatic rescue (open water), search and rescue, high elevation rescue as well as many other rescue types all year, alone or with other agencies.
