Last Comic Standing: And the winner is…

I can’t believe Last Comic Standing is over already. We spent way too much time on auditions and not nearly enough time on finalists, if you ask me.

I couldn’t watch Last Comic Standing live because I wasn’t prepared to miss the premiere of Bachelor Pad for anything. That’s right. You heard me. And I’m not ashamed. Guilty pleasure TV is the best thing for a Monday night, so Last Comic Standing got bumped to Tuesday. There was a downside to this decision, though: I heard who won the show on the radio on Tuesday morning. And I wasn’t happy.

So knowing that my least favorite comic, Felipe Esparza, had won the show made watching Last Comic Standing much less pleasurable. But I watched it anyway. When Craig Robinson announced the first elimination, I couldn’t help but feel a little sad when I saw five men in black suits standing there. Seriously? Not one lady? Sad face. The first person eliminated was Myq Kaplan, who was my pick to win. The next comic to be eliminated, and therefore came in fourth place, was Mik DeStefano. I was never a fan and felt he went farther in the competition than he really deserved. Roy Wood Jr. placed third, and Tommy Johnigan placed second. Had I not already known the winner, I would have really been rooting for Tommy because I liked him a lot and don’t like Felipe at all. But them’s the breaks, comedy peeps. Everyone has different taste and apparently most of America didn’t share mine.

Ha…Ha…Yawn…

This finale did not have enough material to warrant two full hours. The reigning “Last Comic Standing” performed, and I was thrilled to find out that last season’s winner was a chick! Yay! She was very funny – I loved the bit about women saying how tall they are “in heels”, and she got extra credit for falling on the floor while wearing a hot dress and heels.

I was disappointed to find out that not all the comics would be performing. I felt kind of cheated. I wanted to see more of my favorite contestants. Instead we just saw Felipe and Tommy do sets, and then there was a whole lot of filler. So. Much. Extra. Crap. What was Gloria Gaynor doing there? Don’t get me wrong, I dig that song like any other karaoke-loving girl. But relevance, folks. I’m just asking for a little relevance.

None of the comic’s performances really impressed me. Andy, Greg and the Marriage Ref’s sets all bored me, and Natasha’s kind of annoyed me. Her voice was annoying, her jokes sounded like they were written for Paris Hilton, and I didn’t understand why she was dressed as though she was going out as a flapper for Halloween. I did love the line “Bragging that you had sex with a prostitute is like bragging that you got Doritos from a vending machine.” That was great. The highlight of the show for me was Kathy Griffin’s set. She always cracks me up.

Overall, the key word for the final episode was “filler”. It all felt like filler, and I’m left feeling kind of disappointed in the season overall. It’s not just because I don’t like the winner. I wanted to see more of the finalists. I felt like Tommy Johnigan was really hitting his stride and, given a few more episodes, could have won over some more fans. Especially because people who were voting for Myq Kaplan and Roy Wood Jr. would probably have transferred their votes over to Tommy. Alas, we’re left with Felipe Esparza as the winner. What do you think? Are you happy with this season of Last Comic Standing?
