Legislation Expands Review of MLA Compensation

An independent review panel will take a thorough look at MLA salaries, benefits, and pensions under legislation introduced today, Dec. 6.

Changes to the House of Assembly Act will allow the three-person panel to do a comprehensive review of elected members’ benefits, including housing and constituency allowances, pensions, expenses, and any other reimbursements.

Previously, the Act only required a review of salaries.

“Nova Scotians deserve accountability and transparency from their elected officials,” said Justice Minister Lena Diab. “This legislation will make sure the compensation received by members of the legislature is fair, responsible, and independently determined.”

The legislation requires the Speaker of the House to appoint a review panel by Dec. 31. The panel will file its report by March 31. The Speaker is able to grant an extension, if necessary.

A review was previously required to be completed within 90 days after a general election. The change allows for more time to accommodate the broader scope.

The legislation applies to the current review period only.
