Lifeguard Supervision Begins this Weekend

Surf’s up on many of Nova Scotia’s most popular beaches beginning Saturday, June 30, when lifeguards hit the sand to keep beachgoers safe.

“We’re excited to mark the beginning of another summer of safety and fun on our provincial beaches,” said Natural Resources Minister Margaret Miller. “Please follow lifeguards’ instructions and make safety a priority when swimming and during other water sports.”

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service provides 80 lifeguards to supervise 23 beaches in 12 counties. Last summer, more than 320,000 people joined lifeguards on the beaches and more than 100 rescues took place.

“We are hoping for another safe season, but are preparing staff for any incident that could occur,” said Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service director Paul D’Eon. “We urge beachgoers to swim in the supervised areas, between the red and yellow flags.”

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch supervise select beaches. They also guard some federal and municipal beaches. A complete list is available at www.nsls.ns.ca.
