Local Producers Earn International Recognition

A production with a Nova Scotia connection has earned producers Rick LeGuerrier and Timothy Hogan a prestigious International Emmy Kids Award nomination.

Mr. LeGuerrier and Mr. Hogan’s production company Dream Street Pictures is nominated in the TV Movie/Mini-series category for their made-for-television movie The Phantoms.

This is the only Canadian nomination at this year’s awards.

“What a tremendous honour to have a Nova Scotia company nominated for this prestigious award,” said Michel Samson, Minister of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism. “With award-winning children’s authors, internationally recognized animation and digital gaming studios, and one of the world’s leaders in the creation, production and licensing of family entertainment rights, Nova Scotia has great depth in this rapidly growing industry.”

The Phantoms is based on actual events after the 2008 motor vehicle accident that killed seven Bathurst, N.B., high school basketball players, and their coach’s wife. A year later, after much debate as to whether the team should reunite and play again, the team won the provincial championship.

“A nomination like this is great because it gives us the chance to take an inspiring story to a much larger audience,” said Mr. LeGuerrier, vice-president of Dream Street Pictures. “It has been an incredible project to work on, and Tim and I are very proud of the end result.”

The International Emmy Kids Awards will be held today, Feb. 10, in New York. The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will present 24 awards in six categories.

“Recognition of this calibre speaks to Nova Scotia’s international reputation as a leader in the kid’s entertainment industry,” said Cheryl Hodder, chair of the board of directors, Film and Creative Industries Nova Scotia. “The agency’s goal is to build on the province’s strength in this area by providing opportunities for other businesses to take advantage of this rapidly growing industry.”

The International Emmy Kids Awards will also be held in conjunction with the Kidscreen Summit. A group of Nova Scotia producers will attend this annual event. The Kidscreen Summit provides content developers with access to, and intelligence from, industry leaders. The summit is the leading forum for businesses in the kid’s entertainment industry.

Film and Creative Industries Nova Scotia is the lead development agency for the creative industries in the province. Providing a variety of loans, investments, programs and services, the agency works to support the growth and development of Nova Scotia’s creative enterprises.
