The Phantoms, a production with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick connections, has earned producers Rick LeGuerrier and Timothy Hogan a prestigious International Emmy Kids Award.

The only Canadian nomination at this year’s awards, the moving story was selected over nominees from The Netherlands, China and Germany at the second annual awards ceremony held Monday, Feb.

10, in New York.

“We are so proud of this incredible project and are honoured by the recognition of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences,” said Mr. LeGuerrier of Halifax-based Dream Street Pictures. “Tim and I are so proud of this production.”

Mr. Hogan attended the awards on behalf of Dream Street with supporters including Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Michel Samson, Film and Creative Industries Nova Scotia board chair Cheryl Hodder, president and CEO Lisa Bugden, Valerie Creighton of the Canada Media Fund, and Agnes Augustin of the Shaw Rocket Fund.

“Nova Scotia is incredibly proud to have this local company honoured with such a prestigious award,” said Mr. Samson. “The province is known for its vibrant film and television industry and recognition like this showcases the province on the international stage.”

The Phantoms is based upon events after the 2008 crash that killed seven Bathurst, N.B., high school basketball players, and their coach’s wife. A year later, after much debate about if they should reunite and play again, the team won the provincial championship.

Bathurst Mayor Stephen Brunet attended the ceremony and was overcome with emotion as Mr. Hogan accepted the award. In his speech, Mr. Hogan dedicated the win to the people of Bathurst, their courage and their incredible sense of community.

The International Emmy Kids Awards presented 24 awards in six categories.
