Lost hikers located in woods near Enfield, Enfield, N.S.

2015/10/16

Halifax District RCMP, Halifax Regional Police K9 Unit and the Enfield Fire Department located two lost hikers in the woods near Enfield early this morning.

At approximately 10:15 p.m. last evening Halifax District RCMP were dispatched to Oldham Road where local residents reported a vehicle had been parked near a vacant home for several hours and were concerned.

Preliminary investigation determined that two males from the Halifax area, a 49-year-old and an 83-year-old, had parked their car earlier in the afternoon on Thursday and went hiking in the woods. The men started walking out of the woods around supper time however darkness closed in making it difficult to negotiate their way though rough terrain and thick bush.

RCMP contacted the men on their cell phone and instructed them to call 911 in order to have their phone pinged. Just after 1 a.m. Halifax Regional Police K9 Unit located the men deep into the woods and other members of the rescue party were directed to the location. The rescues and hikers walked out of the woods, arriving safely at approximately 3:30 a.m. Both men were treated by Emergency Health Services then transported to hospital for further evaluation.

This is a beautiful time of year for hikes but the weather can change quickly. Police are reminding people that it is important to advise family and friends of any hiking plans. You should also prepare for cold and wet weather by packing warm clothes and provisions such as food, water and a fully charged cell phone in the event of an emergency.

Halifax District RCMP would like to thank Enfield Fire Department, Halifax Regional Police K9 Unit, and Emergency Health Services personnel for their assistance.
