Lost kayaker rescued with assistance of personal locator beacon

East Cranberry Lake, Digby County, Nova Scotia.

On April 30 at 9:30 p.m., Digby RCMP was notified that a personal locator beacon had been activated in the Digby County area. The information provided to police was the name of the owner of the beacon and the GPS coordinates.

Local Ground Search and Rescue teams were activated, and the RCMP was also assisted by personnel from the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources personnel in attempt to locate the individual who activated the beacon. Access to the area by ground was difficult, and as a result the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Halifax was contacted to provide access to the area by air. The four kayakers were located by a Royal Canadian Air Force, 413 Search and Rescue Squadron Cormorant helicopter based in Greenwood. Search and Rescue Technicians assessed the situation. One individual was transported to a hospital in Yarmouth by the Cormorant for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries due to exposure. The other three kayakers were not injured.
