MacKay Bridge closed this weekend

HHB release:

Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) is advising drivers that the A. Murray MacKay Bridge will be closed to all traffic from 8 p.m. Friday, October 24, to 5:30 a.m. Monday, October 27.

The weekend closure will allow crews to safely remove cable inspection platforms and the demolition of the back ramp of the MacKay Bridge garage. After the bridge reopen, the ramp demolition will stretch into Monday necessitating the full closure of the Princess Margaret Boulevard (South ramp) for the day. The Princess Margaret Boulevard North ramp is unaffected.

Because large cranes are required, the closure is weather-dependent, particularly for wind.

To help reduce congestion during this time, HHB is encouraging the use of public transit whenever possible. To support that effort, ferry service will be free to all passengers throughout the closure period — courtesy of HHB.

During this time, motorists can expect delays and are encouraged to:

  • Allow extra time to reach their destinations
  • Avoid peak travel periods when possible
  • Drive alternate routes with patience and caution

The Angus L. Macdonald Bridge will remain open, with usual weight restrictions in place. As a reminder, vehicles over 3,200 kg (except passenger buses) are not permitted to cross the Macdonald Bridge. Bridge Patrol will be monitoring and enforcing this rule.

HHB appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this important work continues. For updates and bridge traffic information, check back her, or follow HHB on social media.
