making late summer fruit last longer

making late summer fruit last longer

I wish I knew this trick a long time ago, especially when we were living up North! The trick to making your fruit {specifically berries} last longer and not turning moldy overnight in the fridge goes beyond rinsing it off with water and storing properly.  In order to kill any mold spores that might already be present that water alone cannot remove, make a sink bath of water and vinegar for your fruit.

It doesn’t take much, maybe about 1/4 cup of vinegar to a 1/4 sink full of cold water. Let it sit for a few minutes {no need to rinse}, strain and store.

Before learning this trick our strawberries would last a day at most – now I can pull out fresh and fuzz-free berries from the fridge after 4-5 days.
