Man, 2 Youths Face Charges in Relation to Street Level Robberies

A man and two youths face charges in connection with street-level robberies

Investigators in the General Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division have charged a man and two youths in connection with robberies that happened in and around the Halifax Common in November 2015.

Between November 7 and November 29, seven street-level robberies occurred in the proximity of the Halifax Common where groups of youths were using violence against individuals or groups of people and stealing items from the victims. Police deployed a number of resources to address the rash of senseless violence in our community. Yesterday, as a result of the investigation, investigators arrested three male youths, and a man and a woman, ranging in age from 15-18 and all of Halifax. All of the arrests were made without incident. The woman and one of the youths have since been released without charges.

Two 17-year-old youths have been charged with robbery and aggravated assault in connection with a  robbery on November 7 at approximately 1:55 a.m. in the area of Maynard and Cunard Streets in Halifax. The 34-year-old victim, who was assaulted and had his wallet stolen by a group of people who fled the area, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The two youths are scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court this morning.

One of the 17-year-old youths also faces charges of robbery, aggravated assault, possession of stolen property and trafficking stolen goods in connection with a robbery in the area of Cogswell Street by the Emera Oval on November 29 at 1:10 a.m. A group of 10-15 youths approached two men and a woman who were walking in the area. A female youth punched the woman in the face, knocking her to the ground, and took her wallet. Another youth punched one of the men in the face, knocked him to the ground and punched and kicked him. The other man came to the aid of his friends and the group then fled the area on foot towards North Park Street. All three victims were treated at the scene by EHS.

In relation to the November 29 robbery, an 18-year-old man from Halifax has also been charged with possession of stolen property and trafficking stolen goods and was released on a Promise to Appear. He is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court on March 9.
